Here is the breakdown of DEI positions and salaries at the University of Virginia identified in the Virginia Association of Scholars report, “Should Virginians Pay for University ‘Diversity’ Leftism?”
In 2020, UVa spent more money than any other public Virginia university on DEI staff and salaries. In 2021, UVa doubled the number of administrators and increased spending on salaries by 66%.
These numbers reflect only a fraction of the total administrative costs imposed by the DEI bureaucracy. They do not include employee benefits, office space, travel & entertainment, engagement of outside consultants and speakers, or DEI-related tasks performed by staff and faculty with other job responsibilities.

What can one say – absurd beyond any possible measurement.
Speechless. Worthy students who have been denied scholarships & other financial aid should be appalled.
This is beyond outrageous. UVA spends almost $7MM in direct salary expenses for DEI bureaucrats who harp on prior UVA and US racial transgressions that no longer exist. They promote victimization among blacks and unfairly slander white students who had absolutely nothing to do with prior centuries’ racism.
To what end? Self-flagellating white liberal guilt?
Using this logic we never should have implemented the Marshall Plan after WWII to rebuild Axis power nations. Furthermore, we’d hold Germany, Japan, and Italy responsible for the sins of their ancestors 8 decades ago and demand the current citizens of those countries be remonstrated continually.
Move on. Dismantle DEI. Reallocate those millions of dollars in salary expense to student scholarships based on financial need and academic merit. Award these scholarships on a color blind basis.
DEI is not just a horrific waste of money, it is an insidious cultural cancer that promotes victimhood and discord among the students and faculty.
The effort and money being spent is wasteful, counterproductive and intellectually dishonest.
This article provides an excellent start at explaining why anyone born in this country, even from “enslaved” ancestors, should kiss the ground and thank God.

DEI/CRT is divisive – but with Marxist roots, what else would you expect?
How about UVA get back to education? How about the BOV taking on its required role of being the adult in the room, instead of the feckless rubber-stampers?
We have known for a while that UVA made a big mistake in giving Pres. Jim Ryan the helm of our ship. Rather than perpetuate the ideals of Edgar Shannon, Frank Hereford, and John Casteen among previous Presidents, this guy is taking us down the road of the “bad hires” of Bob O’Neill and Terry Sullivan…none of whom had any idea of what a UVA education meant. The DEI initiative at Virginia is money thrown away, and violates the principal of earning your way through life by accomplishing something worthy of merit regardless of your background.
Daunting. Perhaps I overlooked it. What is the goal? Is it objective and measurable? When will we know it is time to stop? Will one of these 88 employees tell us?
It will never end until America is destroyed. It is the ONLY purpose of UVA, education be damned.
And I am not kidding or engaging in hyperbole.
Here is UVA’s DEI website – https://dei.virginia.edu/
Now, go to every tab and open up every link.
For example, look at all of the “Learning Resources” – https://dei.virginia.edu/learning-resources
Be sure to look at EVERY ONE. Of ALL the tabs.
Now, look at the History Department – https://history.virginia.edu/
Which do you think the Ryan Administration cares about more?
Again, the BOV needs to intervene and get UVA back to education, to following truth, not pursuing virtue signaling.
Disgraceful. It seems our alma mater’s priorities both philosophically and fiscally need far more sunlight shined on them. I’d like to hear the supporting arguments defending such a bloated and entirely unnecessary budget for a department that clearly is NOT based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind.
These wasteful costs help take UVA out of financial reach for those meritorious applicants from middle class families. Our political leaders should call attention to this wasteful spending which restricts access to a quality education for so many deserving Virginia and national families.
You are on target. Look at the course catalog. Look at the bureaucracy. Look at all the building going on. Care about the cost? Seems non-existent. Based on a 2011 grad and a should be 2025 grad, costs seem up 150% to this tuition and everything else payer…
It’s absolutely absurd…. I can’t believe how much money is wasted on this crap. As a current student, I haven’t seen or met with any of these people. Who even knows what they do!? And getting paid over 100k to do nothing?? Wasting my tuition money!
You are totally justified in your anger, Upset Wahoo. Please tell your parents to email President Ryan and the Board of Visitors. Unless they hear from enraged parents nothing will change.
If you are out-of-state as our 2 daughters were (Class of ’14 and ’17) your folks are paying over $300,000 for your four year education given today’s “cost of attendance” for non-Virginia students. It now costs $77,278/year for 3rd and 4th year students in the College, $86,050 in the McIntire School of Commerce since they charge a premium (https://sfs.virginia.edu/financial-aid-new-applicants/financial-aid-basics/estimated-undergraduate-cost-attendance). That’s more than an Ivy League cost of attendance. Harvard is $76,963 (https://registrar.fas.harvard.edu/tuition-and-fees#hcol).
Feel cheated? Talk to the DEI bureaucrats and ask them if this is “equitable” for out-of-state parents who don’t qualify for financial aid. By the way, financial aid stops at $125,000/yr. in family income. That’s a cop and a secretary’s combined salaries where I live in Baltimore.
Our taxpayer money hard at work!
