Course DESCRIPTION/GOALS
The idea that women’s main role in the republic is birthing citizens has experienced a renaissance. This course explores the politics of evangelical Tea Party women, including their construction of authentic citizens as white and Christian; explains the cultural logics that secured Trump’s election; and analyzes the effects of this version of reproductive politics for public policies in the Trump era ranging from immigration to welfare.
Course Objectives
Students will be critically conversant in the following as they relate to the Tea Party and the ascendancy of Donald Trump to the presidency.
• The historical placement of themes through the lens of American Political Development
• The intersection of identities in the politics of the right, including race, gender, class, sexuality, and religion
• The nature of the contemporary Tea Party, including insights its formation, profile, characteristics, and influence
• The role of women at the grassroots of the Tea Party
• The role of discourse in the success of the Tea Party, particularly racialized and gendered framings of politics and public policy
• The extent and efficacy of Tea Party discourse in recent elections, namely the ascendance of Donald Trump
Academic integrity
In a community dedicated to scholarship and learning, there is no substitute for academic and intellectual integrity. All participants in this course are therefore expected to conduct themselves honestly and forthrightly at all times. Truth is the coin of our realm and that truth applies not only to words, facts, and ideas, but also to the authorship of those items. Course Format
The goal of an upper level class is always to discuss topics raised by readings in a thorough manner, synthesizing other materials from this course and other courses. Disparate disciplinary lenses should be applied to a course. Thus, your insights from other fields of study are imperative.

• Articles and Handouts. Links to various articles will be posted on Collab and certain handouts will be distributed in class. It is your responsibility to request prior materials if you miss class.
Assignments
Discussion: It is certainly the case that professors are as intellectually stimulated by students as students are intellectually stimulated by their professors. Class discussion facilitates such beneficial interchange. Thus, students are strongly encouraged to contribute thoughts, ideas, and opinions on the topics and issues covered in class. The quality of a student’s contributions is as important as the quantity of a student’s contributions. Discussion will account for a portion of the Participation grade.
• Reading Insights: Twice during the semester, each student will be required to submit three insights (no more and no less) gleaned from the readings and to lead class in discussion. You should integrate all assigned readings for the class period associated with your insights. Finally, you will help lead discussion during that class period. Submit to Collab by 11:59 pm on Tuesday evening.
• Original Research: A research project with both group and individual components will comprise a significant component of the course grade. Research will revolve around topics and methodologies of significance to course themes. Various components of the paper will be due during the semester.
• Thematic Review: Each student will choose from a list of books associated with broad themes of the course. Each student is to submit a six-to-seven-page analysis of the book and share a synopsis during class. Papers should be submitted to Collab by Monday at midnight on the day of class. Consider the following: what fundamental insight does the book contribute to the understanding of the politics of the Tea Party through the lenses of American Political Development; how convincing is the author’s thesis; how does the book square with current realities of the Trump era; what considerations does the author seem to omit? Critically analyze the book relative to the goals and texts of the course.
• Research Review: Each student will choose from a list of books associated with specific themes of the research group. Each student is to submit a six-to-seven-page analysis of the book (no class presentation is required). Papers should be submitted to Collab by Monday at midnight on the day of class. Consider the following: what fundamental insight does the book contribute to the understanding of the politics of the Tea Party through the lenses of American Political Development. How does the book illuminate your co research project?

Another example of how Universities are not teaching students HOW to think but WHAT to think. President Jim Ryan’s goals of diversity, equity and inclusion does not include diversity of opinion, equity of effort or inclusion of people who question the orthodoxy.
I am curious as to how the University defines “power based personal violence,” and interested to research the use of this term at UVa.

It is all of a piece with CRT/DEI as everything is oppressed and oppressor.
So, when evil white guy me tries to assert a contrary opinion as free speech, to one of the thousands of classes of victims (victimhood is a ranking contest), my assertion of that used-to-be-right could be violence and must be suppressed to minimize harm.

In December 2015, (Larycia) Hawkins became the center of a controversy when she made a post on her personal Facebook account for Advent affirming solidarity between Christians and Muslims. Wheaton College suspended her as a result of the negative publicity resulting from the social media post, which pictured her wearing hijab and explaining that it was an expression of solidarity with her Muslim sisters at a time when Muslims were facing rising ethnic tensions in the U.S. Hawkins was placed on paid administrative leave on December 15 as the school determined whether her statement was at odds with the school’s core beliefs. On February 8, 2016, Wheaton College and Hawkins issued a joint statement that they had “reached a confidential agreement under which they will part ways.” On March 3, 2016, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia announced that Hawkins would be appointed as the school’s Abd el-Kader Visiting Faculty Fellow.
Yes, the point of view is definitely partisan. But somehow,as one who attended the University in the late 1960s when it was predomonantly white male, conformist and overwhelmingly dominated by fraternities I cannot get upset, And there were complaints about liberal faculty back then oh yes.
As one who went in for tie-dye and not coats and ties’ only had one hangout on Rugby Road which was the Prism Coffeehousr and not a frathouse ,who supported increased minority enrollment and coeducation who belonged to the ‘radical” Southern Student Organizing Commitee I think that sounds like an interesting course.
And at the same time I think those who can’t distinguish between Jefferson and oh lets say Hitler and Mussolini are what Mark Twain called in another context ” a pack of goddamn fools.’ Campus radicals back then would say that the University did not do a good job of living up to Jeffersonian ideals- not that he was a depraved tyrant!
Sounds like there is nothing at UVa like the old Newcomb Hall grill where grad students and undergrads, law school and teaching assistants would hang out and have political and philosophical discussions, with a variety of viewpoints. An anti-Communist Cuban exile might debate with a left- cheaning innividual who had a Che Guevara poster on his wall. A Robert Kennedy Democrat might chat with a Young Republican Reagan fan over coffee and doughnuts.

Not just the University but all too often everywhere we see what Stephen Stills called ” nobody’s rightwhen everybody’s wrong”.
I think all of your comment is fair, except for the first sentence. I think it is beyond partisan, and offensive and racist. If you reversed it to Obama and some group of supporters in such a stereotypical way, the activists would be demanding the head of the prof/student/speaker.
I was 1975-1984 and the faculty was liberal, but they kept to their courses and students could meet and speak. GDIs could go to frats; frat guys could go to Pav XI, etc. People could say what they actually thought.
UVA, as an educational institution, needs to get out of indoctrination – the orthodoxy – and back to an environment where people can be as you remember in an educational environment. It is a disservice to the kids and a real dishonoring of Jeffersonian free speech principles.
Jim Ryan comes through again teaching students to hate and judge based on the color of their skin and political affiliation. How much money does it get to sell out America? Elitist Jim!
This is simply a case where the the Commonwealth is paying for the indoctrination of students rather than creating an environment in which students learn to think for themselves. This is simply wrong and yet another reason why we should support Governor Youngkin in his efforts to take back the Commonwealth education system from the liberal progressive left.
One wonders if anyone actually signs up for this course. To me it seems like a waste of time. Perhaps it satisfies some already indoctrinated students, but for any serious person there must be far more rewarding and relevant pursuits. Would any student walk away with a decent grade if he held opposing views? One wonders.
